The Kentucky Derby

Some may know that I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Churchill Downs this past weekend photographing the Kentucky Derby for them. I was hired by the track to photograph their vendor spots and shoot whatever I wanted along side the shot list, so it was an amazing opportunity. Let me just say that the Derby is an amazing event, so amazing that I now I understand why “happy derby day” has become a widespread greeting and salutation in Lou-ah-ville. In one event you have absolute and complete madness on one side and highly civilized formal parties with strict etiquette on the other. I’ve never experienced anything like it. It’s truly an amazing experience and one of the most exhausting at the same time. It was HOT, and I had about 45lbs strapped to me for two and half days, so my feet and back were pretty much done by the end of the Derby. I want to personally thank Shannon, and especially Kristin and her family for being both extremely accommodating and setting me up with this opportunity. I really can’t thank them enough.

Life has been crazy for myself and my family the past few months. It’s been one trial after another. However, it all seems insignificant when we reflect about sacrifices made for us and the importance of such a day like this. God is good and his loves shines through the dark clouds of trials. It’s easy to forget all the things going wrong in life when you see your daughter in her adorable Easter dress, and all you want to do is snatch her up and hug and kiss her, even if your pregnant wife is yelling at you to stop taking photos and hurry up because we’re late for church! Ellie is the light of my life and I can’t believe this time next year and I’ll have another child to make that light even brighter. The next few months I’ll be super busy photographing some amazing things and I’m super excited to share them with everyone.

I had an absolute blast photographing Kristy and Doug and their son Charlie! Such amazing people who just so happen to live in amazing house. I wanted to declare squatters rights and make it my studio! Did I mention it’s located in one of my favorite areas of Southern Maryland? No? Well, it is. Even more awesome is their little boy Charlie. With big blue eyes and a great big smile, he’s certain to melt even the hardest of heats. I truly had a wonderful time with this family and I look forward to getting to know them more! Thanks so much Kristy and Doug!

It’s always a pleasure meeting talented young people pursuing their dreams, Imani is doing just that. She’s a super talented musician that has an incredibly bright future ahead of her. I had a blast working with her and she was fantastic in front of the camera, a natural. We had an awesome team that helped pull this shoot off, so big thanks to Alex, Lacey, and Imani’s parents Kisha and Richard. Keep an eye for Imani, you’ll be hearing from her in the future.

Hot Fiya! — Revisted

So the Hot Fiya! series kind of fell into my lap a few years ago. My amazing friend April Gomez was over my house hanging out with some friends and the topic of her latest hobby came up. She decided to show us rather than describe it and so I pulled the camera out and a photo series was born. It’s nice to be surrounded by amazingly talented friends and April has many amazing talents. She and her husband recently moved back into the area and she promptly contacted me about shooting photos of her eating fire, and I naturally obliged. If you’re ever looking for an amazing character to perform for you personal or corporate event, look no further than April, she can spin or eat fire, walk on stilts, make amazing balloon animals, and who knows what else. She’s amazing!

What I’ve been up to lately — BIG POST!

Ok, take a deep breath, we’re going in! It’s no secret that the winter is slow season for photographers, work slows almost to a halt, and while that’s unfortunate, it allows me to shoot the stuff I love. This post just showcasing some of the work I’ve been doing during this past winter season.

I was contacted by the Choral Arts Society of the Washington DC to photograph their MLK Tribute concert with 3 gospel choirs at the Kennedy Center, their retiring Maestro, Norman Scribner was also presented with the MLK Humanitarian Award. It was an amazing night of wonder lively music. The tickets are cheap and it’s seriously a fantastic concert, so if you’re every looking for something to do in January, head out to the show. The Choral Arts Society of Washington and the Washington Performing Arts Society do a fantastic job.

Three things I love in life: Motorcycles, Cars, and Skateboarding. Nothing beats fast cars and an invite to a private skate park.

I recently had the pleasure of traveling out to Las Vegas for the WPPI 2012 convention and trade show with my good friend John from John Sharpe Photography. I carried the Fuji X100 with me most places, but failed to take very many photos. We had the distinct pleasure of meeting up with Jonathan Canlas and his past F.I.N.D. workshop attendees for dinner at the amazing Krung Thai. What an amazing night, I had to pinch myself! Met some amazingly talented photographers, ate good food, and had an all around awesome night. Easily the highlight of the trip. Can’t thank John enough for letting me tag along! Paul Swan from Krung Thai was an awesome guy who certainly takes pride in his karaoke, if you want the best karaoke in Vegas, hit up Krung Thai!

In the years that it took my wife and I conceive with our Ellie, Mikey came into our lives, and since then, I’ve loved him like my own. He’s the son of my one of my closest friends, an amazing graphic designer, and together we are unstoppable! Mighty Mikey turned four recently and he had himself a super hero birthday, so in honor of his big day, dad and I rocked out some epic photos for him to remember this great day for the rest of his life. We too got caught up in the moment and couldn’t resist ourselves….

In celebration of the beautiful day, I took my little girl out for a walk to look at the ducks at the lake in our neighborhood. Can’t believe how big she has got over the last several months and how fast she walks now! They grow up too fast!

Another amazing sunset in Southern Maryland

I was going through some photos from this past month and found a series of photos I shot on the amazing Fuji X100 of a sunset on the Potomac River in St. Mary’s County at my wife’s uncles house. It’s sad that these views are so hard to see in the Southern Maryland area if you don’t live on the water or know someone who does. They’ve almost become hidden and only accessible by those special enough to live or own land along the many water ways in Southern Maryland leaving the rest of us having to rely on the few state and national parks in the area, which all just so happen to close at sunset (lucky us).
